Switzerland always fascinates me with its mountains. So I joined the trip with my husband’s family to visit Jungfraujoch.
Jungfrau
The name Jungfrau (“maiden, virgin”), which refers to the highest mountain overlooking the Jungfraujoch, is most likely derived from the name Jungfrauenberg given to Wengernalp, so named for the nuns of Interlaken Monastery, its historical owner.
However, the “virgin” peak was heavily romanticized as “goddess” or “priestess” only in late 18th to 19th century Romanticism. After the first ascent in 1811 by Swiss alpinist Johann Rudolf Meyer, the peak was jokingly referred to as “Mme Meyer” (Mrs. Meyer). Source from Wikipedia
We drove to Grindelwald. Upon arrival, it was time to eat something. Left the hotel and rush to look for an Italian restaurant.
There were many tourists I could see around dining.
Once the sun is down, it gets pretty cold and I notice that every guest of the restaurant we were at starts to leave.
The following early morning, we took the train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg train station.
Kleine Scheidegg station is 2061 meters above sea level. The train has arrived for Jungfraujoch. We hop on the train with TV screens showing information about Jungfraujoch.
Twenty-five minutes later, we arrived at Jungfraujoch.
I was on top of Europe.
Jungfrau is called the top of Europe due to its highest train station of 3,454 meters above sea level.
