This is a wine review of a famous Italian wine from Bolgheri region, which can be considered a Super Tuscan wine
Le Serre Nuove (pronounced Le Sarah New Ove (like “ole” except l is turned into v) is the 2nd wine of the famous Super Tuscan wine Ornellaia. It is a true 2nd wine in that it uses the same grapes as Ornellaia only the grapes come from younger vines and generally, Le Serre Nuove has more Merlot than Ornellaia (which normally is more predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon). Le Serre Nuove was first produced in 1997 and the winemaker argues it should not be called a 2nd wine and should be a wine that does not lie under the shadow of Ornellaia (then again, he doesn’t like the term Super Tuscan either).
If you find this wine difficult to pronounce, you can refer to it as “baby Ornellaia” or “Le Serre Ornellaia”.
Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori and it is now owned by Frescobaldi. The name Ornellaia comes from the word “Ornello”, meaning ash trees (which are prized in Tuscany for their resistance and flexibility) and “aiai” which means field of something. The literal translation for Le Serre Nuove is the new greenhouse.
The 2018 vintage of Le Serre Nuove is a blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Petit Verdot. The wine is fermented in stainless steel then aged in oak (25% new oak, 75% 1 year old oak) for 15 months, then aged in bottle for a further 6 months before release.
It is priced at B.C.Liquor stores for $74.99
