Palloncino – translated from Italian (and aptly named!) after the ‘bang or pop’ of a balloon – is a collaboration between a couple of local wine importers keen to see a true expression of one of their favourite styles of sparkling wine.
Glera is the grape, and Prosecco is the style. Often-times mishandled and made into something really sweet not too refreshing, they wanted to stay true to its Italian origins and present an Australian take on this classic.
By seeking out vineyards that share similar properties to that of northern Italy, there’s a real honesty to this ‘Australian Prosecco’.
A mixture of vine training methods and high-density plantings allow the vine to flourish and for a range of Mediterranean grape varieties to really shine. The Murray Darling region is vast and sometimes under-appreciated, but fresh and fun wines like this mean that some lucky people at least will be able to taste the results of their vineyard work!
Proper Prosecco – that is, the stuff made in Italy – is always made from a local grape called Glera that originates in Northern Italy. Fantastic then to see and taste a real Glera grown in our own backyard! Fermented without any chemical additions to retain freshness and a clean expression of the Glera varietal, this is a sharp, juicy little bubbly that is crisp, delicious and refreshing.
