Valtellina Wine
Valtellina, an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, has been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna).
Valtellina red wines are among Lombardy’s most prestigious, and their niche appeal continues to grow. The very finest Valtellina wines, those sold as Valtellina Superiore, were granted full DOCG status in 1998 (see Valtellina Superiore), followed in 2003 by the Amarone-like Sforzato di Valtellina.
