Hello everyone. Part 2 (day 2 and 3) of a winter camping solo hike to the abandoned town of Onunchio, 1100 mt, at the end of February. Please stay safe and subscribe ⭐️
Trailer of the full adventure to see what’s up next.

Gaining proteins, losing back weight these two days!

DAY 2
Very nice long sleep. No fire left in the pit, but there’s a lot of birch bark available around (very good fire starter!!). The water ran for an hour; then i decided it was ok to drink.
It’s of course spring water, but, as you can see, the last part of the pipe is certainly metal. Anyway I had just a bit of it, boiled at least. I had enough safe water left on me for drinking.
As I hit the path, water streams from the melting snow up above are unleashed almost everywhere like hunting dogs chasing spring. Very suggestive scenario, I decided I should take it slow. Another day to get more fit and lose a bit of more weight? Not a bad idea.
Up ahead I found another couple of stone houses few meters away from the path but they weren’t abandoned and all locked up this time! I camped outside, amidst the two. Cooked some delicious pork fillet simmered with red wine. Went to bed with the sun and woke up to it. Gentle night.

DAY 3
Determined to push it to the final destination of my journey, I quickly packed up and start the climb. The cameos of nature you see are taken during the pauses to rest my shoulders. Crossed a roaring stream before the very final push. At Onunchio, I was immediately welcomed by one chamois grazing the high pastures just freed from snow and by the cheering sound of the town fountain. I admired the incredible views and looked back at the path I had just covered.
Found out that three or more houses are actually inhabited up here! Hunters, I was told, that come up here just occasionally. Turns out Doaglia, the ruins I slept in the first night (found by accident after losing the path), was the one only real ghost city. Lucky.
I slept in the main piazza. All houses were locked. There was just a small structure with roof you could use as shelter, but didn’t like the location because it was lacking the views. The piazza is also the terrace overviewing the valley. Wanted to wake up to that.
Nothing against hunters, but their very visible solar panel and especially the automatic night lights they have installed around, are a bit out of place for somebody looking to leave back civilisation for a few days. I’ll look for a better spot the next day…
