Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and other top officials attended the state funeral of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and his bodyguard Vittorio Iacovacci, as the ceremony was held in Rome on Thursday.

Under the command ‘Honour to the Fallen’, the guards carried the coffins covered with Italian flags, into the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels and Martyrs, traditionally hosting prayers for Italy’s eminent figures. The march was accompanied by military orchestra music.

Attanasio and Iacovacci were kidnapped and shot dead in an attack on a United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) convoy, on Monday.

The Congolese authorities accused Rwandan ethnic rebel militias of perpetrating the attack. A group of six men allegedly shot the WFP driver Mustapha Milambo and captured the passengers. The two Italians were reportedly killed during a confrontation between the rebels and DRC Army attempting to free the hostages.
