2015 Le Casematte, Faro DOC, Northeastern Sicily
55% Nerello Mascalese, 25% Nerello Cappuccio, 10% Nocera, and 10% Nero d’Avola
We can’t stop thinking about the nose on this intensely savory and beautiful Sicilian red, that normally retails at $45-$50.
If you’re not super familiar with Sicilian Wine, here’s what’s worth knowing:
Located just off the Southern tip of the Italian peninsula, winemaking on the island of Sicily goes back thousands of years. You are probably familiar with one of its most popular exports, Marsala, a fortified wine made famous by… you guessed it… Chicken Marsala.
But Sicily offers a huge stylistic range, lots of wild traditions, and terrific value. It doesn’t have the tourist economy of Tuscany or Piedmont, so it’s tougher to get the wines on drinker’s radars. But they sure can be delicious!
What you can expect:
Med+bodied with rich red fruit, dried herbs, smoke, orange peel, and well-integrated fine tannin
Coop’s Thoughts:
This wine is showing some wisdom with 5 years of age. The primary fruits have started to take a back seat to join the more rustic and smoky flavors, which I think should come in really handy with food. If you’re wanting something familiar, you might consider holding off. This is for the adventurer. If you’re a lover of Italian wine, this should be in your wheelhouse. Just make sure you have prosciutto around.
