Chef Nelson German is a Dominican-American who was born and bred in uptown Manhattanβs Washington Heights. He has trained countless hours in NYC kitchens and has spent over a decade creating his destiny through culinary travels, including his most recent stint in September 2019 when he picked up simple but brilliant Italian cooking techniques by staging at the renowned Senza Civico Ristorante located in a small Italian town called Rodi Garganico in the Puglia region. Within the same month, Chef Nelson was featured in a newly released cookbook titled, East Bay Cooks.
Nelsonβs passion, drive and humble nature has propelled him through the hardships of the restaurant industry to finally seeing his dream come true in his first Chef-driven eatery, alaMar Kitchen & Bar, located in the heart of Uptown Oakland (est. 2014). In March 2020, he opened his second venture Sobre Mesa, an Afro-Latino Cocktail Lounge, as an ode to his Latin American roots.
Germanβs unorthodox culinary style draws from his Dominican heritage, his embrace of Mediterranean cuisine and Asian influence from working under internationally acclaimed Chef Yuji Wakiya. Coupled with his love of Californiaβs passion for ingredients that are local and sustainable, his cuisine draws people in by its uniqueness and comforting flavor profiles.β
