Bearing this in mind, an absolute must-see are the famous vineyards in Tuscany. A popular backpacking destination for both wine-lovers, and countryside sightseers alike. If what you’re looking for on an Italian backpacking journey is something less countryside and more akin to adventure and exploration, there’s always the Italian Riviera coastline, where you’ll find Cinque Terre – a line of ancient Italian seaside fishing villages just oozing with culture and history.
Cinque Terre mainly consists of five little towns, these being Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. All of these towns are still connected by ancient footpaths, along which you’ll be the witness to beautiful scenes of the Italian oceanside and breathtaking cliffsides, as well as mountainous rock faces. Not to mention, the awe of the five towns themselves can’t be understated! It’s a long walk to see them all, but a worthy trip for the adventurous backpacker.
Mind that Cinque Terre’s been recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1997, so make sure not to pollute the place! There are plenty of wonderful places in Italy that are under threat from over-tourism, such as Venice. Thought it’s undoubtedly one of the many places in the country that a person ought to see at least once in their lifetime. Read more here –
Venice is a city of romance, the ‘City on the Water’ if we’re being literal. And no doubt it’s one of the better-known names in the world, as well as one of the most popular backpacking destinations you’ll ever come across on your trip though Italy. And for good reason, as it’s often considered the most unique city in the world. No roads to be found, only canals joining the hundreds of various islands that make up the city, so chances are that you’ll end up on a gondola when making your way around!
Viewing the life in the city is almost as interesting as admiring the structures of the city itself. It’s a feat of wonder that can’t be matched by any other city in the country, as you’ll not find another like it. The food and culture also can’t be forgotten, but they’ll likely come second in your mind when witnessing the majesty and beauty of Venice city – the ultimate backpacker’s destination.
