Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a new set of measures on Sunday to tighten restrictions amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the country.
Cinemas, theatres, gyms and swimming pools will have to close under the new rules, which will come into effect on Monday, while restaurants and bars must stop serving at 18:00 (17:00 GMT), a mask-wearing Conte said during a press conference in Rome.
“Compensation is already ready for all those who will be penalised by these new rules,” Conte said.
Conte said a curfew would not be introduced, but recommended Italians to “move only for reasons of work, health, study, or necessity.”
The new rules were announced one day after Italy reported 19,644 new infections and 151 deaths on Saturday.
The country’s hardest hit regions of Lombardy, Campania and Lazio have in the last week implemented their own stricter local measures, including night-time curfews.
Italy has registered 504,509 cases of the coronavirus with 37,210 deaths related to it, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

SOT, Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “The analysis of the epidemiological curve indicates a rapid growth, with the consequence that in all the territories of our peninsula the spread of the infection and also the consequent stress on the national health system have now reached worrying levels.”
SOT, Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “The new measures will take effect this evening at midnight, and will remain in effect until 24 November. I’ll summarise them for you. Bars, ice cream parlours, pastry shops and restaurants will close at 6pm every day including holidays. After 6 pm, however, they will be able to continue to operate for home deliveries and for take-away. A maximum of four people can sit at restaurant tables, except in the case of larger families. It is forbidden to consume food and drinks in squares and public streets after 6pm. Gyms, swimming pools, wellness centres and spas will close. Game rooms, bingo halls, ballrooms, amusement parks will also close and of course night-clubs continue to be closed.”
SOT, Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “We haven’t introduced a curfew – that’s a word we don’t like – but we make a strong recommendation to everyone. We must move only for reasons of work, health, study, or necessity. And we also recommend for you to avoid receiving people who are not part of your family unit at home.”
SOT, Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “I don’t like making promises. I prefer to make a commitment on behalf of the entire government. Compensation is already ready for all those who will be penalised by these new rules.”
SOT, Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Italy always manages to demonstrate its cohesion and its strength in the most difficult moments. If we respect all these new rules this November, we will be able to keep the epidemic curve under control. We will then be able to relax the measures and face December, and hopefully the Christmas holidays, with greater serenity.”
