The New York Italian Hero. Whether you call it a deli-style Italian sub, hoagie, grinder, or whatever, I call it absolutely delicious! To make a good one you need good quality Italian cold cuts. For this classic Italian hero, we added capicola (also known as gabagool, coppa, cappy), salami, pepperoni, Boar’s Head ham, and provolone cheese. Topped with a delicious oil and vinegar dressing, shredded lettuce mix, onions, tomatoes, and cherry peppers, this deli sub has it all! I hope you enjoy this Italian sandwich! This is the first episode in the Italian hero/sandwich series.
INGREDIENTS:
(For a large hero use anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 pound of meat plus one layer of provolone.)
– 1/10 pound capicola – thin sliced
– 1/10 pound Genoa salami – thin sliced
– 1/10 pound ham – thin sliced
– 1/10 pound pepperoni – thin sliced
– one layer of provolone cheese
– tomatoes – sliced
– onions – sliced
– cherry peppers – seeded and chopped
– shredded iceberg lettuce – toss with oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, s/p
– 50/50 mix of olive oil and red wine vinegar
1. Layer the meat, then the cheese onto 1 large hero (sub, hoagie) roll.
2. Top with the lettuce, cherry peppers, tomatoes, and onions.
3. Soak the bread with the oil and vinegar mix and the meat.
4. Eat quickly so the sandwich doesn’t become too soggy. Enjoy!
