Being hot in Italy, as far as the weather is concerned, is the norm for most of the year.
Spicing up Italian food is also one way of making those Italian dishes that little bit hotter than would normally be the case.
However, some foods are neither hot nor spicey, and yet they possess certain qualities to be regarded as aphrodisiacs, making the term, “being hot” give a totally different meaning!
In this video, you’ll learn of five more fruits and vegetables consumed in Italy that are regarded as having aphrodisiac qualities!
#5. Basil.
Although a herb, Romans considered this as a symbol of love, ever since it was used as a floral motif in ancient Roman brothels!
The smell of basil is also thought to arouse the senses and generate instant attraction, and is why it’s used as an ingredient in perfumes.
The basil used in Italian cooking is sweet basil, and is an ideal complement to tomatoes, pasta dishes, sauces and soups, and desserts.
And to validate basil as an aphrodisiac, it has anti-inflammatory properties and libido-enhancing nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, and minerals such as beta-carotene, magnesium and potassium – all good stuff for a healthy love life.
#6. Cedro (pronounced as chi-dro, in Italian).
A native plant of southern Italy, it’s harvested and used to create liqueurs and fruit juices.
Its aroma and scent are something to be experienced, so it’s no surprise to learn that the oil extracted from its peel is used by major perfume manufacturers of Italy and France.
#7. Celery.
The plant is credited with providing the infamous Italian lover, Casanova, his legendary stamina.
There is some biological reasoning behind this, as the scent of celery contains heightened amounts of the pheromone called androsterone.
Pheromones make men sexually appealing to women, and androsterone is produced by the sex glands, which for men, increases their masculinity.
#8. Cherries.
Cherries are also said to boost pheromone production as well as being good for healthy blood flow, especially to those parts of the body where you want blood to flow to!
It’s no coincidence then, that in Italy, cherries have a number of romantic-sounding names such as amarena, marasca and moretta…. to name a few.
#9. Chili Pepper.
The Italian saying is “pepperoncino”, and is used to refer to someone of the opposite sex as being “hot”.
Chili peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin, which helps boost testosterone and increase libido.
Combined with releasing endorphins into the brain, resulting in an accelerated heartbeat and dilated pupils, that can only mean one thing!
Pepperoncino is found mainly in Calabria, and is an ingredient for many local pasta, and fish dishes.
Has that got you licking your lips in anticipation of preparing a delicious meal, to share with a special person in your life?
