Many Italian wine regions have experimented with the big international grape varieties, but the other side of the coin is a rediscovered interest in certain little-known indigenous varieties – and Albarossa is precisely one of these. Produced in Piedmont in Italy’s far northwest, this wine from family grower Dezzani has an intense ruby red colour and plenty of rustic charm. It’s spicy and bursting with red fruit – sour cherry and raspberry – and features a long, toasty, almost chocolatey finish. Game dishes are called for here, but this red is a good all-rounder and also very competitively priced. Recommended!
