The origins of bagels take us back in the 17th century, in the Jewish community in Poland. Later, the Jewish community took the bagel tradition in the United States, then they made history in New York.
I will show you have to bake these delicious bagels at home. And what I love about them is that they rest a little bit crunchy but so fluffy and soft at the same time.
As for seasoning, I prefer poppy seeds, sea salt, and sesame seeds.
This is how to make bagels:
Ingredients:
flour 500g.
sea salt 5g.
dry yeast 7g.
sugar 20g.
lukewarm water 300ml.
1 egg
olive oil 2 tablespoons
baking soda 1 teaspoon
poppy seeds
sesame seeds
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, mix the flour with salt.
2. In a separate bowl, add the yeast, sugar, and lukewarm water, then let to rest for 5 minutes.
3. Pour the yeast mix and start kneading.
4. Knead until you obtain a nice and nonsticky dough.
5. Put the dough in a large bowl where you have added some olive oil and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
6. Once ready, knead the dough for a couple of minutes and divide it into 8 equal parts.
7. Shape dough balls and place them on parchment paper, then let to rise for the other 30 minutes.
8. Meanwhile, in a large pot, boil water and add the baking soda.
9. Once the dough balls are ready, using your thumbs, make a hole in the middle and enlarge it slightly.
10. In the boiling water, boil each bagel for about 2 minutes, one minute on each side.
11. Place the bagels on parchment paper, brush with egg wash (optional) and sprinkle the poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and sea salt.
12. Bake them in the preheated oven at 215°C for about 20 minutes.
