Welcome to Italy!

In particular, welcome to Italy’s best 20 wine regions to visit – a beginner’s guide to sampling, arguably, the best wines in the world! What is it that appeals to you about Italy?

Is it the architecture…. is it the food…. is it the fantastic scenery…. is it the warmth of the people…. is it the contrasts of the mountains and winter sports of the north…. with the hot beach-laden south…. or is it…. the wine?

I’d guess that one of those items just mentioned resonates more with you than the others.

However, the one item that complements all of the others is….wine!

To appreciate Italian wine beyond just the taste, it always helps to have a basic understanding of the wine itself.

It’s the stories behind the wine that helps to capture peoples’ imagination.

Wine is to be enjoyed…. Italy…. is to be enjoyed! The two go hand-in-hand.

So, to begin your journey of discovery of Italian wines, let’s start with the grading system the Italian wine authorities use to differentiate the best from the good wines!

And the reason it’s helpful to grasp this, is because Italy is split into 20 regions, and each region is a wine region!

So, to establish some form of level playing field, the controlling body is known as Denominazioné de Originé Controllata (The D.O.C.).

Under the Controlling Body are four quality grading denominations, and then there are five “style” classifications used by the wine producers to help differentiate their wines further.

1. The four quality grading denominations are:

(1) D.O.C.G. (Denominazioné dí Originé Controllata é Garantita).

This is the top wine denomination, so quality control is paramount.

(2) D.O.C. (Denominazioné dí Originé Controllata).

This is the next classification down from D.O.C.G.

It’s rules cover the production process and the style (only in Italy would they think of applying style to wine!).

(3) I.G.T. (Indicazioné Geografica Tipíca).

As a recognition of the differing wine production scales between the larger commercially-run winemakers and vineyards, and the more local family-run concerns, wines under this classification are produced with grapes and with methods not allowed under the D.O.C.G. and D.O.C. rules.

(4) V.d.T. (Vino da Tavola).

These types of wines are probably best described as table wines.

2. The five wine style classifications are as follows:

(1) Reserva: this denotes a superior wine that has been aged for a much longer time than not-so-superior wines.

(2) Superiore: this denotes a high-quality wine, produced from specific grape varieties for a particular region.

(3) Classico: this denotes wines that come from a particular area of production.

(4) Azienda Agrícola: this denotes an estate or a farm that grows its own grapes and produces its own wines.

(5) Annata: this refers to the year the grapes were grown; and

(6) Vendemmia, which refers to the year of the harvest or the vintage.
