The United States consumes the largest volume of wine of any country, at 33 million hectoliters in 2019. At 26.5 million hectoliters, France was the second leading consumer of wine worldwide.
As anyone who has perused the wine aisle of a grocery store knows, there are dozens of varieties of wine on the market, which are produced from different types of grapes. For instance, some of the more common varieties are Riesling grapes, Syrah grapes, and Merlot grapes. In the United States, Merlot was the most popular variety of wine among consumers in 2018.
Global Wine Production
Italy, France, and Spain are the top wine producing countries worldwide, by a significant margin. In 2019, Italy’s wine production amounted to nearly 47.5 million hectoliters. In 2019, the total volume of wine produced was estimated to be around 260 million hectoliters worldwide. Although global wine production has seen a net increase over the last two decades, the surface area covered by vineyards has decreased during that time period.
