1. Südtirol DO Alto Adige Lagrein Kretzer 2019
Appearance: medium pink
Nose: medium (-) intensity, red cherry, raspberry, white pepper, strawberry candy, fresh-pressed strawberry juice, grapefruit
Palate:
sweetness: dry
Acidity: medium (+)
Alcohol: medium
Body: medium
Flavour intensity: medium
Flavours: red cherry, raspberry, white pepper, strawberry yogurt, fresh-pressed strawberry juice, grapefruit
Finish: medium (-)
Conclusions: Good quality, it has well-defined primary aromas together with some MLF hints on the palate. The length is relatively short, thus will not be able to reach the very good bracket.
This wine is not suitable for bottle ageing. The fruity aromas and flavours will fade along with the time, and there is no progression detected in terms of positive flavour changes.
2. Müller Thurgau, Feldmarschall Von Fenner, Tiefenbrunner 2016
Appearance: pale gold
Nose: medium (+) intensity, it’s an aromatic wine; pineapple, concentrated lemon juice, petrol, baked apricot, cantaloupe, ripe white peach
Palate:
sweetness: off-dry
Acidity: high
Alcohol: medium
Body: medium
Flavour intensity: medium (+)
Flavours: pineapple, mango, concentrated lemon juice, lime juice, baked apricot, cantaloupe, baked white peach
Finish: medium (+)
Conclusions: Very good quality, although the petrol aroma at the beginning is kind of putting people off, the complex aromas and flavours justify this is a wine with high-quality. Well-balanced in the mouth and a relatively long finish.
This wine is not suitable for bottle ageing. This is an aromatic wine, along with time, the aromas will reduce. However, the petrol note will increase over a period of time.
3. Maculan 2016 Torcolato
Appearance: medium amber
Nose: pronounced intensity, honey, candied yellow peach, apricot jam, marmalade, ginger
Palate:
sweetness: sweet
Acidity: high
Alcohol: medium
Body: medium (+)
Flavour intensity: pronounced
Flavours: honey, candied yellow peach, apricot jam, marmalade, ginger, dry mango, caramel
Other observation: luscious
Finish: long
Conclusions: Outstanding quality, it a luscious sweet wine with pronounced aromas as well as flavours. The sugar and acidity are well-balanced. Plus the persistent finish makes this wine outstanding.
This wine is suitable for bottle ageing. The high acidity and medium (+) body gives the structure for ageing. And the complex and pronounced aromas and flavours will develop along with the time.
4. Antolini, Marano di Valpolicella, Recioto Della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017
Appearance: intense ruby
Nose: medium (+) intensity, sweet strawberry, amarene, ripe plum, dried figs, kirsch, coffee, dark chocolate, raisin
Palate:
sweetness: sweet
Acidity: high
Tannin: medium, grip
Alcohol: high
Body: full
Flavour intensity: medium (+)
Flavours: strawberry jam, amarene, ripe plum, dried figs, kirsch, coffee, dark chocolate, raisin
Other observation: a bitterness finish
Finish: medium (+) finish
Conclusions: very good quality, the flavour elements are all at a quite intense level. On the palate, the alcohol level is slightly stand out at the moment, tannin is a bit grippy.
This wine is suitable for bottle ageing. The high acidity and full body give sufficient structure for ageing. More tertiary aromas will develop along with the ageing. The alcohol will be more integrated with the wine.
