The Mustilli family settled in the town of Sant’Agata dei Goti at the start of the 14th century and has been producing wine for 5 centuries! Sant’ Agata dei Goti is a sub-region of the DOC (delimited Italian wine zone) Sannio, located 250m above sea level and almost 1 hour north-east of Naples. Mustili is the only winery in the area… they’ve got this pristine part of Campania all to themselves! All 20+ hectares are planted to indigenous varieties, allowing them to focus on what the region does best.
Leonardo Mustilli was the first in the late 70’s to put local white varieties Greco and Falanghina on the wine map label them on the bottle – prior to this they had always been blended, or simply written as ‘bianco’. Nowadays the winery is run by the daughters Paola and Anna Chiara, who carry on his passion and great work. They make great reds as well as their trademark whites, all the wines imbued with tension and flavour, vibrant interpretations of the land.
This is a vibrant wine, hand harvested and gently stirred in tank to amplify the texture. The wine is gentle initially, building in flavour. There’s a mix of lemon balm, yellow apple, some salty notes and a touch of green almond. No oak has been used here, but it has presence nonetheless. It’s a balanced wine, with plenty of character, but unfurls slowly, gradually revealing its glory.
