2017Alexander Kalterersee Classico Superiore
A lot of Schiava comes from the Lago di Caldaro (Italian) / Kalterersee (German) DOC @wein.kaltern
This is actually a pretty large appellation between Bolzano and Trento. This appelation must be 100% Schiava.
The grape is called Schiava in Italian, Vernatsch in German (But in Southern Germany it is called Trollinger).
This small new winery, @weingut_nicolussi_leck Tenuta Nicolussi-Leck is run by a family that has a B&B looking over the Caldaro lake.
The vineyards are at 350 Meters above sea level with a 40* Steepness.
This Schiava from Lago di Caldaro is grown underneath the Castelchiaro /Castel Leuchtenburg castle ruins.
Even though this wines is a 2018 Vintage, the name of the wine is confusingly called “2017Alexander” Named after the owners son who was born in 2017.
Confusingly Italian wines are allowed to put a date or year as the brand name.
Apparently this wine won 2 Schiava Awards!
“Vernatsch Cup”. Since 2004, Winemakers and wine writers from Italy, Germany Switzerland and Austria come to Sudtirol to Schiava and choose (multiple) Schiavas of the year! This is so cool!
Dolomiten “Vernatsch des Jahres” Another Schiava competion run by the South Tyrol German-language newspaper “Dolomiten” where they taste almost 100 different Schaiva! Dolomiten is the oldest newspaper in South Tyrol.
