Ask a denizen of Bengaluru or a visitor to name the city’s most popular restaurant, chances are the response will be Mavalli Tiffin Rooms or MTR. Not surprising given that it is the city’s oldest standing eatery, nearly 100 years from the day it first opened doors in 1924!
For those used to seeing this institution teeming with customers every waking hour, its current outward desolateness may seem unnerving. But step inside to find this century-old establishment bracing for life in the new normal. From revamped, sanitised processes to consolidated menus, for instance, the 21-item traditional lunch now makes way for a more convenient and packaging-friendly 9-dish mini-meal, to preparations for a contactless dining experience that is being envisaged for the future.
After all, they do have a tradition of innovating through adversities in the past, as illustrated in the invention of the rava idli during the rice famine of the 40s, or the seed for MTR packaged foods that was sown during the 1975-77 emergency.

Mini Meals
No longer the enormous spread that would be a delicious gateway to a post-lunch slumber, the mini meals is compact in its post-covid avatar. But that doesnt get in the way of making for a satisfying lunch, puri, saagu, rice, rasam, palya, mosaru anna, poppadom, uppinakayi and payasam, the mini meal has all that you need to savour a taste of Mavalli Tiffin Room.

Masala Dose
Although packed in a foil-lined box, the masala dose is missing its crunch in takeaway mode, understandably, as opposed to when savoured at the restaurant. You can heat it on a tava with a dollop of ghee to make some amends, and the flavours are trademark MTR, the sprightly chutney smeared inside the dosa and the flavourful, bright aloogadde palya. The chutney is rich in coconut and green chilli spice. All in all, makes for a delicious takeaway dose, once you get past the expectation of eating something crisp.

Rava Idli
A dish born of a crisis, the rava idli is said to have been invented in the kitchens of Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, when there was a shortage of rice during the famine of the 40s. This is a flavourful rava idli that is rich in yoghurt, embellished with coriander, mint, coconut and topped with toasted cashew, and does spectacularly well as a takeaway. The aloogadde sagu serves well to moisten the idli with its savoury character.
