Orvieto and Alfredo Sauce Pairing

For Pasta in Alfredo sauce, an Italian Orvieto is the wine to reach for. Orvieto is a crisp, dry white wine featuring lemon, lime, green apple, and almond on the nose and palate followed by a mineral finish. The fruit flavours are a great way to cut through the richness of the Alfredo sauce, while the almond notes bring out the nuttiness found in the pasta and Parmesan Cheese.

Orvieto can be a tricky wine to buy as its personality differs from vineyard to vineyard. To be given a DOC seal, Orvieto must be 40-60% Trebbiano grape, 15-25% Verdelho grape, and the remainder being a mix of other grapes. Thus you’ll find rather neutral Italian Trebbiano Orvieto vs wineries who add more grapes to the mix. This is why we gave the pairing four stars, as it may be tricky to find the proper Orvieto. The benefit of this, however, is it gives you lots of opportunity to experiment and find the wine you enjoy most.

Chardonnay and Alfredo Sauce Pairing

When it comes to pairing Chardonnay with Alfredo sauce, I prefer a full-bodied Chardonnay that has a buttery flavour to it. This buttery quality will complement the rich texture and flavour of the Alfredo Sauce. Meanwhile, the crisp tropical flavours in the wine will cut through the sauce and highlight any additional ingredients you might have tossed in the pasta , such as shrimp, lobster or chicken.

I give this pairing 4 1/2 stars out of 5 as Chardonnay is easy to find, and we’re certain you’ll love this decadent pairing!

Pinot Noir and Chicken Alfredo

Chicken Alfredo is full of rich Parmesan Cheese and thus commands a wine high in acidity to help wash these flavours away. Pinot Noir is up for the job, as it is light and fruity and will have no issue cleansing your palate, and bringing out all the subtle chicken flavours. Pinot Noir is also earthy and will complement any mushrooms, bacon, or earthy spices you might toss in to your Chicken Alfredo dish.

I’m giving this 3.5 stars out of 5, which is still a great pairing. White wines tend to a go a little better with Chicken Alfredo, but as far as red wine goes, this will be an affair to remember.

Barbera & Alfredo Sauce Pairing

Barbera is an Italian red wine that is low in alcohol, acidic, and fruity flavours. The acidity of Barbera has no issues cutting through the rich and creamy Alfredo sauce, while the fruitiness offers a refreshing contrast.

Barbera can be a touch rustic, meaning it has herbal and earthy notes that not everyone appreciates, so be aware, this wine might not be your jam. If you’re open to rustic wines, Barbera is fantastic with chicken and mushrooms tossed in an Alfredo sauce.

Pinot Bianco & Fettuccine Alfredo Pairing

Pinot Bianco is similar to Pinot Grigio in taste, in that you’ll experience plenty of pear, apple and white flower aromas. Where it differs, is that Pinot Bianco has a creamy texture that complements the weight of a rich Alfredo Sauce.

Despite being creamy, Pinot Bianco is a crisp white wine, that cuts through the Alfredo Sauce with ease and offers a refreshing finish that keeps you hungry for more. If you’re having a hard time finding a Pinot Bianco, a Pinot Grigio will make for an acceptable substitute.
