A short, information packed, sometimes disturbing, look at drinking in 1347ce Italy, during the first European landfall of the Black Plague.
Recipe:
Hippocras
1 bottle of red wine (I used Anglianico)
1.5 oz sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
1 finger sized piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
4 black peppercorns
4 whole cloves
Combine all ingredients in a pan and heat to a simmer. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour through a fine strainer to remove spent spices. Heat back up to serve hot, stick in the fridge to enjoy cold.
