Blues player flips a pancake in the middle of his solo while he listens to a backing track of himself Jamming. After wrapping some banana in the pancake he gives a wine review. Amazing. The blues heavy driving rhythm guitar on the backing track was recorded next to an open window and includes a dog barking at the beginning and countless bird noises throughout. It looks fun in the kitchen with a stellar solo, some interesting face expressions and a very hot pan being loaded with pancake mix. Timing is everything. Will it turn out good or will it get messy ? If that’s not enough excitement it turns educational with the hybrid blues scale being explained and the secret list of the three different flours used in the pancake mix. Then there is a wine review of an Italian 13.5% Ricossa Barbera d’Asti. Find out if it’s good with pancakes. A fun packed entertaining video.

In Carl’s own words ” Well I was as asking my friends for requests of educational things that I could include in a you tube video. I normally teach guitar but I also have a keen interest in cooking. I was asked if I could demonstrate flipping a pancake while playing guitar and another person wanted a wine review. The thing is, I really wanted to deliver the videos by the next day. I needed to go out to catch the shop but was running out of time and was so nervous about the fact that I might drop a pancake. I had nearly finished the wine before filming. I got the backing track finished, rushed into the kitchen and had to blast the video out in 1 take. It was scary but sometimes you do your best work when you only have one go because it causes you to focus. To be fair it has some good moments. It was one of the best pancakes I have ever eaten and I managed to get to the shop in time to buy more wine”.

How do you cook the best pancake ?

1. Get your pan hot with just enough oil to coat the bottom of your pan. Olive oil is good.

2. Make sure your mixture is not too thick. It should glide off the spoon but not be runny.

3. Whack your mixture into the pan and wait about 1 and a half mins, flip it and then wait another 1 and a half mins before tipping it out. It takes about the same time to cook as most songs that you hear on the radio. If you don’t have a timer, put on the radio, drop the mix in at the start of the song, flip around the second chorus and slide out your perfect pancake when the song ends.

4. You only need flour and water to make your mixture but most people add a pinch of salt. You will find many recipes that include eggs, milk or baking powder. I like to keep it simple but find using different flours makes it interesting. Experiment and find your own favorite ingredients.

5. Serve them warm with lemon juice. You can also experiment with chocolate, banana or strawberries to go inside your. You can sprinkle small pieces of fruit onto your pancake and then roll it up so it’s easier to eat.

Do you want to jam along with the song ?

The song is in the key of (A) and the scale used in this demonstration is a hybrid blues scale. If you want to play it yourself you can play frets 5, 7 & 8 on strings 1, 2 and 3.
