Away from the droves of tourists, the true Ticino is dotted with magical spots: family-run grotti (traditional taverns), traditional workshops and breath-taking inns. Someone who knows every nook and cranny all the way from Leventina to Mendrisiotto is Pepe Regazzi. As the author of two cook books, he clearly describes how Nonna Lina prepares traditional polenta, which herbs and spices you can add to salami to make it extra tasty, and what makes Ticino Merlot so good. Pepe, who was born and bred in Ticino, is also one of the pioneering snowboarders in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland – these days, he is head coach for the Swiss national snowboard team. Thanks to his expertise, Iouri Podladtchikov won gold at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. However, Pepe’s biggest goal was never to come home with an Olympic medal; team spirit is much more important to him – just like his love of good food.
