The Metropolitan Transit Authority shut down all the subway stations in New York City due to the coronavirus spread, in what is reported to be the first planned shutdown ever conducted in the city’s subway history, Wednesday.

The subway stations will be closed overnight from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. local time, allowing personnel to sanitise stations as well as carriages.

Police and subway personnel were seen working at the cordoned off station, with a homeless person trying to stay there overnight.

The cleanings are expected to be held every night, with buses taking over the subway routes.
