New signs instructing the public on social distancing requirements appeared on Milan public transport on Monday, as Italy prepares to enter its second phase of the coronavirus lockdown.
Seats that are to not to be used were marked on subway trains, while red circles were drawn on the ground to help people avoid close proximity. On buses, passengers were encouraged to use the central and rear doors, while the new signs were also visible at bus stops and at metro entrances
Milan’s city government has estimated that public transport will only be able to accommodate 25 percent of pre-outbreak passenger numbers due to the measures.
On May 4, nearly three million people will be moving across the country, but Italian authorities are promoting the use of bicycles and electric scooters to avoid overcrowding on public transport.
Italy’s ‘phase two’ is planned to last until May 18, as the country remains one of the hardest-hit nations worldwide by the coronavirus. As of Monday, the country has 197,675 confirmed cases, with 26,644 people dying with the virus , according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
